opportunity for customers to review data or
processes that have been in use for years and
refresh or update them with the new best
practices in S/4HANA as required.
吀栀e Green昀椀eld approach involves leaving the
old system behind and starting again from
scratch with a brand-new SAP S/4HANA
installation. 吀栀e only data migrated over to
the new system is open and active information.
However, many companies will still require
fast access to historical information about
customers, orders, and other details. If they
want to migrate this type of data over to a
Green昀椀eld system, they could be faced with
a long and complex conversion project since
the data will need to be transferred almost
manually at table and object level. Importantly,
taking this “big bang” approach will require a
major time and e昀昀ort investment in change
management – from the technical, process
and user perspectives, among others.
Green昀椀eld also won’t be able to leverage all
the previous investments you’ve made in your
ECC installation, which could well be an
important part of your competitive advantage.

and improved SAP S/4HANA options (such as
Fiori applications, real time analytics, and the
new 昀椀nancial process bene昀椀ts), while providing
a subset – such as by years or company codes –
of historical data from the legacy SAP systems.
吀栀e methodology works by mapping the
processes and data currently in use to the new
system while safeguarding the interdependencies
and interrelationships between the various data
and document items. For example, if you have a
partly-delivered sales order that’s still active in
your ECC system, Natuvion’s ALLFIELD™ will
keep all the contextual links when it transfers
the order over to SAP S/4HANA. As this is
executed automatically, the time and e昀昀ort
usually required for cutover planning and
management is minimized.
3) Selective Data Transition (SDT):
the best of both worlds
A new and more innovative approach to
the data migration conundrum is Selective
Data Transition (SDT). We call it Natuvion’s
ALLFIELD™ and it is also known as Blue昀椀eld™
but the approach is essentially the same. It
merges the bene昀椀ts of the Brown昀椀eld and
Green昀椀eld implementation options while
minimizing their constraints. SDT enables
customers to transfer the data and processes

SAP con昀椀guration over to the new system
(o昀琀en called a “shell” – i.e. without any data in
it – and then choose which information should
